Don’t get me wrong, when you decide to work from home it is a serious decision. When you have taken all considerations into account and decided to start your business from your home, you are taking a big step.
If you have worked in big corporations like I have, you are suddenly alone and have to deal with all the various sides of running a business.

From being a “small wheel” in a big business, you are now the big wheel in a small business.
This means that you are now responsible for:

  • Sales
  • Marketing
  • Warehousing
  • Product development
  • Procurement
  • After sales service
  • Quality Assurance
  • Human resources
  • Manufacturing

You are in charge and you have to deal with all of this. Every day.
Working from home has a lot of advantages. No commuting, you can work when you like. No parking problems, no cramped busses or trains. I just walk into my kitchen and start working. I like this. A cup of coffee first, then the working day starts.

I have to organize my working day like I did before, there is no difference there. But wait, gone are all the meetings during the day  I love this. Most of the meetings were pointless anyway. Sorry ex-working mates.

Thanks to internet and WiFi zones I now divide my working day in the best possible way. I get up early and do my writing. I write texts for clients websites and my own blog. This takes me normally about 3 hours or so. I get up at 6, so at 9 I am finished, normally.

Then I drive Helene, my girl, to work, before I go into the center of Odessa and into one of the cafes there with WiFi. From the café I submit my material, drink a cup of coffee and chat with other people on the net and in the café. This is also where I follow up on my other activites, so if you see someone with a head set drinking coffee and talking, it’s me.

I drive home when the submitting is done, and start thinking about my next taskst. I work out ideas, and prepare a the next morning work before Helene comes home and we have dinner.

I have a fantastic life.

The key to this is structure. I have defined my working model very clear and I follow it carefully with a lot of discipline.
In the morning when it is quiet I write my posts. Then I go out to post it, and you may ask why? I have internet at home, broadband and high speed, but I have to see other people. My flat is nice, no problem there, but without a proper working schedule it will all be a mess. This is not different from working in an office in a big corporation. The difference is that I can choose my place and time of work. This gives me the freedom I want, right now.

But without a properly defined working day I get nothing done.
